Turns out Facebook has been deliberately crashing their Android app for some users to test their patience (and see after which threshold the remove the app). Also at one point they tried a test run with "a small country" where all the users there were asked to install the Facebook app from a web link instead of the Play Store.
As much as I get the virtues of A/B testing - this is taking it a "bit" far....
