A big AI breakthrough in Google's Project Loon Internet balloon network may allow effective coverage over land with about 1 percent of the original airborne balloons. Instead of having huge armies of balloons wafting around all over the world, the AI tuning allows them to cluster intelligently in specific places.
This has been in the works for a while, so perhaps this is as much a progress report announcement to counter others who are eyeing aerial Internet services.
